2558 Jethro Tull - Hunt by Numbers

Image
From: J-Tull Dot Com ; Year: 1999; Genre: Hard Rock/Progressive Rock I was listening to a lot of Jethro Tull last night and am still in the mood this morning; this is one of the songs I listened to last night that stuck in my head. Anyway, this ode to Ian Anderson's cats is one of the band's heavier songs and is very riff driven. Hear Hunt by Numbers on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Peter Jay & The Jaywalkers - Can-Can My song pick two years ago today: Jethro Tull - Home My song pick three years ago today: Steve Vai - Details at 10 My song pick four years ago today: England Dan & John Ford Coley - Westward Wind My song pick five years ago today: Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade of Pale My song pick six years ago today: Louis Armstrong - Hello Dolly

2557 Nocturnal Rites - Ring of Steel

Image
From: Tales of Mystery and Imagination ; Year: 1997; Genre: Power Metal I had this song on my mind this morning, so, as I always do, I took it as a sign that I was to pick it. Anyway, much to the dismay to others it's written very similar to Johann Pachelbel's Cannon in D-Minor. For the first 1:20 or so it plays the melody in a classical chamber music style and then kicks in for with the full band. I absolutely love this one; it's fun to listen to and the different ways they play that melody within the context of the song. Hear Ring of Steel on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: The Moody Blues - The Sunset/Twilight Time My song pick two years ago today: Hawkwind - Damnation Alley My song pick three years ago today: Chet Atkins - I Wish I Knew My song pick four years ago today: Sergei Prokofiev - Op. 67 - Peter and the Wolf My song pick five years ago today: Lalo Schifrin - Scorpio's Theme My song pick six years ago today: Rush - Dreamline

Image
From: Vampires, Cowboys, Spacemen, & Spooks: The Very Best of Joe Meek's Instrumentals ; Year: (1962); Genre: Instrumental Rock I had another song in mind for today, but this neat piece of instrumental music seemed to fit my mood better, so it's my pick. You can instantly tell that this is another one produced by the incomparable Joe Meek; his mark is all over it. Hear Taboo on YouTube. 2555 Harlequin - Superstitious Feeling

Image
From: One False Move ; Year: 1982; Genre: Rock A while ago I rediscovered this Canadian rock band and thought I would pick one of their songs. This track has a great sound to it with a mix between the 70s hard rock and some of the 1980s sound too. Hear Superstitious Feeling on YouTube. 2554 Karussell - Wintermärchen

Image
From: Solche wie du ; Year: 1989; Genre: Rock The other day this track came on my iPod whilst on the road and it felt like a great pick for this Sunday. This is another nice song from the twilight of the DDR period of music from Karussell just before The Wall came down. This is still one of my favourite albums from the band and contains a lot of music I like, including this song. Hear Wintermärchen on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Ian Anderson - Old School Song My song pick two years ago today: Alice in Chains - Them Bones My song pick three years ago today: America - Lonely People My song pick four years ago today: Rammstein - Weißes Fleisch My song pick five years ago today: The Steve Miller Band - Space Into/Fly Like An Eagle My song pick six years ago today: The Delgados - The Light Before We Land

2553 "Weird" Al Yankovic - Word Crimes

Image
From: Mandatory Fun ; Year: 2014; Genre: Comedy/Parody/R&B I've been enjoying this newest "Weird" Al album; this is, at this point, one of the most popular tracks from it. This one's a parody of Robin Thicke Blurred Lines in which Mr. Yankovic wields his dictionary like a weapon to teach everybody proper English in only the way he could. Watch the music video clip on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Fleetwood Mac - Come a Little Bit Closer My song pick two years ago today: Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grappelli (Quintette du Hot Club de France) featuring Freddy Taylor - I Can't Give You Anything But Love My song pick three years ago today: Rin' - Fuhen My song pick four years ago today: Cream - Badge My song pick five years ago today: Steeleye Span - Seven Hundred Elves My song pick six years ago today: Billy Joel - Prelude/Angry Young Man

2552 Chet Atkins - Funky Junk

Image
From: Chet Atkins Picks on Jerry Reed ; Year: 1974; Genre: Country/Funk Today marks my 45th consecutive Funky Friday and when thinking about what to pick I decided on something way out in left field from what's expected. As a crossover between country pickin' and funk this one does pretty good. As with the rest of the music on the album, this is a cover by Chet Atkins of songs Jerry Reed wrote. It starts out with his normal style country/blues picking with a slight hint of ragtime, but slowly gains the funky beat and each time the tune comes around the music gets funkier and then eventually brings it back down. Hear Funky Junk on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: The Steve Miller Band - Overdrive My song pick two years ago today: The Doors - Light My Fire My song pick three years ago today: Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds My song pick four years ago today: Jethro Tull - Grace My song pick five years ago today: John Denver - Season Suite: Summer My

2551 The Jimi Hendrix Experience - ...And the gods Made Love

Image
From: Electric Ladyland ; Year: 1968; Genre: Hard Rock/Psychedelic Rock Having issues again with my internet today, so I'm making a brief pick. This is one of my favorites from Jimi Hendrix; a nice short instrumental solo in only the way he could do it, which serves as a great intro to the Electric Ladyland album. Hear ...And the gods Made Love on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Boz Scaggs - Can I Make It Last (Or Will It Just Be Over) My song pick two years ago today: Supertramp - It's Raining Again My song pick three years ago today: King Crimson - Sleepless My song pick four years ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 703 - Fughetta: Gottes-Sohn ist Kommen My song pick five years ago today: What Made Milwaukee Famous - Sultan My song pick six years ago today: Arlo - Runaround

2550 Midnight Oil - The Dead Heart

Image
From: Diesel and Dust ; Year: 1987; Genre: Alternative Rock I had some other songs in mind, but they can wait; I really felt like picking something from the 'Oils today. I've always loved this band and their music; it must be the fact that I heard them so much during my childhood years. Anyway, this is an a-typical track from the band with great music and a rather pointed political message. Hear The Dead Heart on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Johnny Rodriguez - Ridin' My Thumb to Mexico My song pick two years ago today: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - Op.49 - 1812 Overture My song pick three years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Down, Down My song pick four years ago today: Savatage - The Ocean My song pick five years ago today: The Steve Miller Band - Serenade My song pick six years ago today: Ben E. King - Spanish Harlem

2549 Porcupine Tree - Lazarus

Image
From: Deadwing ; Year: 2005; Genre: Progressive Rock Felt like some Porcupine Tree this morning and decided on this one, which is one of Steve Wilson's mellower tracks, but is still quite heavy in other ways. Hear Lazarus on YouTube. Image
From: Use Your Illusion II ; Year: 1991; Genre: Hard Rock After listening to some of their music last night on television I got the feeling I wanted to pick one of Guns N' Roses songs. This one is of course one of their more popular tracks and one of the most well-known covers of this Bob Dylan classic. Hear Guns N' Roses version of the song on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: AC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap My song pick two years ago today: Frédéric Chopin - Op.19 - " Bolero " My song pick three years ago today: Missing Link - Filled Up My song pick four years ago today: Hawkwind - The Church My song pick five years ago today: Quincy Jones - Walking in Space My song pick six years ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - Dreamer

2547 Toronto - Enough is Enough

Image
From: Head On ; Year: 1981; Genre: Hard Rock I'm getting pick in from another band that I haven't picked one from yet. I like the sound of this album from the band in particular and then I happened to realize that Terry Brown produced it; so no wonder. To explain the sound of this song in particular would probably be best said as a mix between Heart, Jefferson Starship, and Triumph; it's a great track and definitely worth a listen. Hear Enough is Enough on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Little River Band - Help Is On Its Way My song pick two years ago today: Joseph Haydn - Symphony No.45 in F Sharp Minor - " Farewell Symphony " My song pick three years ago today: "Weird Al" Yankovic - I Think I'm a Clone Now My song pick four years ago today: Primus - Pork Chop's Little Ditty My song pick five years ago today: Jethro Tull - For Michael Collins, Jeffrey and Me My song pick six years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Sh

Image
From: Stranger in Town ; Year: 1978; Genre: Rock I didn't have a song in mind today, but for some reason while thinking about a song to pick this Bob Seger track eventually came to mind. 2545 War - Low Rider

Image
From: Why Can't We Be Friends? ; Year: 1974; Genre: Funk/Latin Rock Today is my 44th consecutive Funky Friday in a row; it's kind of strange, but I'm now edging up on 2600 songs picked and I haven't chosen War's seminal hit Low Rider yet; I must remedy that immediately. 2544 Bachman & Turner - Rock & Roll is the Only Way Out

Image
From: Bachman & Turner ; Year: 2010; Genre: Hard Rock This is yet another one I've been meaning to pick for a bit now and thought I would today. This is a straight up rocker in the style of their great 1970s era music; it's awesome to hear artists that have aged so well and pertain near sound the same as they did in their heyday. Hear Rock & Roll is the Only Way Out on YouTube. Image
From: Nuthin' Fancy ; Year: 1975; Genre: Southern Rock I've been wanting to pick a track from Lynyrd Skynyrd for a bit now and today seemed like a good day to do so. This is, of course, one of their more recognizable tracks; some great hard southern rock. Hear Saturday Night Special on YouTube. 2542 John Fogerty - A Hundred and Ten in the Shade

Image
From: Blue Moon Swamp ; Year: 1997; Genre: Blues/Blues Rock I had a couple of other songs in mind for my pick today, but this one, which has been playing in my mind off and on over the last couple of days, came to my mind and thought it would make a great pick since we've been going through a heatwave; albeit ten degrees cooler than in the song's title. 2540 Jethro Tull - Valley

Image
From: Roots to Branches ; Year: 1995; Genre: Progressive Rock For some reason I had this track running through my mind a lot yesterday and thought I would pick it. This is actually one of my least favourite Jethro Tull albums, but it did have a few gems on it; this is one of the smaller ones in my opinion. It's rife with ideologies and tensions from the conflicts in the mid 1990s, but still good even today. Hear Valley on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Ian Anderson - Photo Shop My song pick two years ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - Over the Mountain My song pick three years ago today: Ome Henk - Neem Een Ander In De Maling ( Barbie Girl ) My song pick four years ago today: Weather Report - Cucumber Slumber My song pick five years ago today: ZZ Top - Gimme All Your Lovin' My song pick six years ago today: Eric Clapton - After Midnight

Image
From: Throwin' Down ; Year: 1982; Genre: Funk/R&B It's another Funky Friday today; number 43 in fact and I felt like pickin' another from Rick James. This is kind of a riff heavy track on the bass the ever-kinkyness that permeates Rick James' music. Hear She Blew My Mind (69 Times) on YouTube. 2537 Yes - Siberian Khatru

Image
From: Close to the Edge ; Year: 1972; Genre: Progressive Rock Last night I was listening to a lot of Yes and thought I would pick one today. I happened to realize that I hadn't chosen this great "epic" song yet, so I'm remedying that today. Funny enough, at just under 9 minutes this song is the shortest of all the songs on the album... all three of them. I've always liked this album in particular; there's something about the music on this one that makes it one of their better records in my opinion. Image
From: Of a Simple Man ; Year: 1972; Genre: Folk Rock I heard this one the other night as well and it's been one that I've always liked for some reason. Last night I heard this one whilst out on the road and thought it would make a great pick seeing as I apparently haven't picked one from The Cars yet; shame on me.
