2682 Béla Fleck & the Flecktones - Scratch & Sniff

Image
From: Outbound ; Year: 2000; Genre: Jazz Fusion/Classical/etc... When I sat down to make my pick today I had the insatiable urge to listen to something from Béla Fleck and his band or renown. This is one of those songs that doesn't have a real genre and rather bounces about to most genres known to man; it's definitely a fun song. Watch a live performance on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Triumph - A World of Fantasy My song pick two years ago today: Fats Waller - Jitterbug Waltz My song pick three years ago today: Jethro Tull - Pibroch (Cap in Hand) My song pick four years ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - Civilize the Universe My song pick five years ago today: Kansas - Carry On Wayward Son My song pick six years ago today: John Denver - The Eagle and the Hawk My song pick seven years ago today: Three Dog Night - Liar

2681 Jethro Tull - Mountain Men

Image
From: Crest of a Knave ; Year: 1987; Genre: Progressive Rock/Hard Rock For some reason I had this song running through my mind for most of the day, so as I normally do I am making it my pick. Like much of the album this one is really carried by Martin Barre's guitar and is a bit heavier than other previous material from the time period. Anyway, this one is almost two songs in my opinion; for the first 2 minutes the music and even the lyrical/subject matter are separate, but that only adds to the dynamics. Hear Mountain Men on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Marcus Miller - Come Together My song pick two years ago today: Journey - Don't Stop Believing My song pick three years ago today: Black Sabbath - The Mob Rules My song pick four years ago today: Roger Waters - It's a Miracle My song pick five years ago today: Eric Idle - F--- Christmas My song pick six years ago today: Otis Redding - ( Sittin' On ) The Dock of the Bay My song pick s

2680 Ohio Players - Jive Turkey

Image
From: Skin Tight ; Year: 1974; Genre: Funk/Soul I couldn't let today go without picking this great and apropos-titled song and with this being another Funky Friday and all, my 64th straight to be exact, I just had to choose it. Hear Jive Turkey on YouTube. 2679 Ugly Kid Joe - Another Beer

Image
From: Stairway to Hell ; Year: 2012; Genre: Rock Last night I was binging on a bunch of stuff from Ugly Kid Joe and thought I would pick another of their songs. This is from their newest album that is actually the first studio material since their 1996 Motel California album, so it's quite a treat to hear more new songs from the band. If you're used to their sound this one fits right it; I love it when bands progress but don't lose their sound or souls. Hear Another Beer on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Hawkwind - Neon Skyline/Lost Chronicles My song pick two years ago today: Louis Armstrong - When the Saints Go Marching In My song pick three years ago today: John Denver - Farewell Andromeda (Welcome To My Morning) My song pick four years ago today: Del Shannon - Runaway My song pick five years ago today: Steely Dan - Black Friday My song pick six years ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - I Just Want You My song pick seven years ago today: Quiet Ri

2678 Joe Satriani - Satch Boogie

Image
From: Surfing with the Alien ; Year: 1987; Genre: Instrumental/Hard Rock When going over in my mind about what song I would pick today I had this rather peppy instrumental start running through my mind; I thought it would make a great pick. Hear Satch Boogie on YouTube. Image
From: Girlfriend ; Year: 1991; Genre: Alternative Rock The other night/early morning I heard this one on the television and thought it would be a nice track to pick. 2676 The Who - Doctor Jekyll & Mr. Hyde

Image
From: Call Me Lightning (single) ; Year: 1969; Genre: Hard Rock I had no real song in mind for today, but this track happened to come to mind. I'm often one that likes songs written by John Entwistle; this one is no different. From what I understand this one was written about drummer Keith Moon's odd and erratic behaviour. The use of the tri-meter in the vocals really sells the feeling of insanity in the song as well as John Entwistle's vocals; it's definitely a gem for a b-side track. Hear Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - All Along the Watchtower My song pick two years ago today: Billie Holiday - Summertime My song pick three years ago today: David Bowie - Young Americans My song pick four years ago today: Eric Robertson - "Spooked" on Classics My song pick five years ago today: Antonio Salieri - Requiem in C-Minor ( Piccolo Requiem ) My song pick six years ago today: Ma

2675 Humble Pie - Black Coffee

Image
From: Eat It ; Year: 1973; Genre: Hard Rock/Blues Rock I found yet another band that I like that I haven't picked a song from yet, so it would seem. Anyway, this is one of my favourites from the band; a pretty good cover song. Hear Black Coffee on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Pallas - The Cross & the Crucible My song pick two years ago today: Nirvana - Come As You Are My song pick three years ago today: Hawkwind - Space Chase My song pick four years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Four Wheel Drive My song pick five years ago today: Savatage - When the Crowds are Gone My song pick six years ago today: Joe Walsh - Ordinary Average Guy My song pick seven years ago today: Warren Zevon - Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner

2674 Pendragon - The Pleasure of Hope

Image
From: The Jewel ; Year: 1985; Genre: Progressive Rock I felt like some more 1980s prog rock this morning; I thought with absolute certainty that I had chosen something from Pendragon, but apparently not. So... why not pick one of their songs today? Right... although whilst they had material released prior this track is from their first proper album. It definitely has a lot of the sounds and feel from that zeitgeist that is 1980s prog rock; synth and such, but delivers in its own unique way. Hear The Pleasure of Hope on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Larry Graham and Graham Central Station - Scream My song pick two years ago today: Béla Fleck & the Flecktones - Stomping Grounds My song pick three years ago today: Mahavishnu Orchestra - You Know You Know My song pick four years ago today: The Kinks - Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues My song pick five years ago today: Rush - Manhattan Project My song pick six years ago today: Andy Taylor - When the R

2673 Dazz Band - Joystick

Image
From: Joystick ; Year: 1983; Genre: Funk/Electronic It's another Friday pick, thus another Funky Friday is in order. This upbeat and ever-so-awesome double entendré laced piece of funk is a delight to the ears for sure. A great song, definitely worth a listen or two. Hear Joystick on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Black Sabbath - Iron Man My song pick two years ago today: Ella Fitzgerald - Stormy Weather My song pick three years ago today: Dead Meadow - Greensky Greenlake My song pick four years ago today: Yes - Owner of a Lonely Heart My song pick five years ago today: Duran Duran - Serious My song pick six years ago today: Styx - Crystal Ball My song pick seven years ago today: Rush - Tom Sawyer

2672 Weather Report - Crystal

Image
From: I Sing the Body Electric ; Year: 1972; Genre: Jazz Fusin This morning I had a lot of music from Joe Zawinul's Weather Report on my mind; this was one that was massively in the forefront. It's a truly great tune, but maybe a bit odd for some, but amazing none the less. Hear Crystal on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Gerry Rafferty - Night Owl My song pick two years ago today: Duke Ellington - It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) My song pick three years ago today: Jefferson Airplane - Somebody to Love My song pick four years ago today: John Denver - In My Life My song pick five years ago today: The Charlie Daniels Band - Legend of Wooley Swamp My song pick six years ago today: The Doors - Strange Days My song pick seven years ago today: Argent - Hold Your Head Up

2671 Iron Maiden - Aces High

Image
From: Powerslave ; Year: 1984; Genre: Metal For no reason what so ever I felt like listening to some Iron Maiden this morning. This is the lead-in track from my personal favourite of their albums. This one is bathed in some incredible music and vocals all around; I only wish the song was longer. Hear Aces High on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Fairport Convention - Chelsea Morning My song pick two years ago today: Jethro Tull - Son My song pick three years ago today: Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grappelli (Quintette du Hot Club de France) featuring Freddy Taylor - I'se a Muggin' My song pick four years ago today: Styx - Light Up My song pick five years ago today: Pink Floyd - Waiting for the Worms My song pick six years ago today: Rush - Roll the Bones My song pick seven years ago today: Béla Fleck & The Flecktones - A Moment So Close

2670 Foo Fighters - Everlong

Image
From: The Colour and the Shape ; Year: 1997; Genre: Alternative Rock/Hard Rock I intended on choosing a song from another band today, but it just happened that I saw something about the Foo Fighters this morning and felt like an excellent time to pick one of their songs instead. This is probably considered their seminal hit and an excellent song at that and among my favourites from the band. Hear Everlong on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Rush - The Analog Kid My song pick two years ago today: The Alan Parsons Project - The Tell-Tale Heart My song pick three years ago today: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Ethiopia My song pick four years ago today: Bass Extremes - Glorious Pastorius My song pick five years ago today: Alexander Courage - Where No Man Has Gone Before (Theme From Star Trek ) My song pick six years ago today: The Temptations - Get Ready My song pick seven years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Not Fragile

2669 Marillion - Bitter Suite

Image
From: Misplaced Childhood ; Year: 1985; Genre: Progressive Rock I felt like some progressive rock with that 1980s flair and, of course, Marillion is one of the best places for just such a great sound. Anyway, this is one among many of my favourites from the band and a beautiful track to say the least. This is another song of theirs that reminds me a lot of Genesis' earlier periods, which is a big plus in my book. Hear Bitter Suite on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Dream Theater - These Walls My song pick two years ago today: Rush - Stick it Out My song pick three years ago today: Nirvana - About a Girl My song pick four years ago today: Forest - Gypsy Girl & Rambleaway My song pick five years ago today: Steely Dan - Caves of Altamira My song pick six years ago today: Free - All Right Now My song pick seven years ago today: The Easybeats - Friday On My Mind

2668 Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Thank You For The Feeling

Image
From: Bachman-Turner Overdrive ; Year: 1973; Genre: Hard Rock I had this one running through my mind this morning, and as I usually do I'm making it my pick. It's another great riff-heavy, album-oriented hard rock tune from BTO; a great song to listen to. Hear Thank You For The Feeling on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Symphonic Theater of Dreams - The Ministry of Lost Souls My song pick two years ago today: R.E.M. - What's the Frequency, Kenneth? My song pick three years ago today: Steely Dan - Bodhisattva My song pick four years ago today: UFO - Rock Bottom My song pick five years ago today: Jethro Tull - Baker St. Muse My song pick six years ago today: Toto - Hold the Line My song pick seven years ago today: Jethro Tull - Kissing Willie

2667 Rammstein - Weiner Blut

Image
From: Liebe ist für alle da ; Year: 2009; Genre: Neue Deutche Härte I was listening to a some Rammstein last night whilst driving; since I don't think I've picked on from the band in a while I thought I would tonight. As with some of their other material they took inspiration from despicable acts that happened in the real world; this one is based off of the Josef Fritzl case . However, the music and the way it was arranged was incredible and sold it for me. Hear Weiner Blut on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Miles Davis - Funky Tonk My song pick two years ago today: Pallas - The Last Angel My song pick three years ago today: John Dowland - Flow My Tears (Lachrimae Pavane) My song pick four years ago today: Slaughter - Days Gone By My song pick five years ago today: Johnny Rivers - Poor Side of Town My song pick six years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Stayed Awake All Night My song pick seven years ago today: David Essex - Rock On

2666 Parliament - Dr. Funkenstein

Image
From: The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein ; Year: 1976; Genre: Funk I'm having a very busy day today, so I'm having to make a quick pick on this Funky Friday; this is a awesomely fun track to go on a day such as this. 2665 Billy Joel - All for Leyna

Image
From: Glass Houses ; Year: 1979; Genre: Rock Yesterday I had a bunch of the music from the Glass Houses running through my mind and they've been still going at it today, so I'm taking it as a sign that I should pick another one from the record. Anyway, I've picked a few from it already, so I'm having to go deeper into the album for a song; it was one I listened to a lot while growing up. This is a excellent track, which features the use of synth and other electronic sounds, which them blend excellently in with the rest of the music. Hear All for Leyna on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Santo & Johnny - Adventures in Paradise My song pick two years ago today: Megadeth - Blackmail the Universe My song pick three years ago today: Black 47 - Fire of Freedom My song pick four years ago today: Aerosmith - Amazing My song pick five years ago today: Banchee - Beautifully Day My song pick six years ago today: The Cure - Burn My song pick seven

2663 Ian Anderson - The Engineer

Image
From: Homo Erraticus ; Year: 2014; Genre: Progressive Rock I was listening to this album last night and this morning and I thought that I would pick another one from it. This is one of my favourites from the album; it reminds me a lot of his mid 1970s sound, which is one of the highest points of the band. Anyway, this one comes from the first (Chronicles) section of the concept album and more or less in just over three minutes gives a feeling of a single person, and engineer during Britain's industrial age on to the modern age. The best part of this song is the music by far; it was exquisitely put together. Hear The Engineer on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: The Royal Philharmonic - Limelight My song pick two years ago today: George Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue My song pick three years ago today: Rammstein - Mein Land My song pick four years ago today: Karussell - Tanzen My song pick five years ago today: Pearls Before Swine - Tell Me Why My song pick

2662 Alestorm - 1741 (The Battle of Cartagena)

Image
From: Sunset on the Golden Age ; Year: 2014; Genre: Power Metal/Celtic Folk Metal This is one from the new album that was recently released from the epic pirate metal band Alestorm. If you heard the band before you more or less know what to expect; although it is interesting to hear Christopher Bowes go into low "gut" vocals like what you would normally hear in death metal in the mid eight section. I love how they mix the account of an actual historic battle in this song. Not bad in the least and it's nice to see that they're staying on course with the sound I've come to know and love. Hear 1741 (The Battle of Cartagena) on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Genesis - Ripple My song pick two years ago today: Joachim Witt - Goldener Reiter My song pick three years ago today: Savatage - Memory My song pick four years ago today: Billy Joel - Goodnight Saigon My song pick five years ago today: S Sgt Barry Sadler - Ballad of the Green Berets

2661 Jon Oliva's Pain - I Fear You

Image
From: Festival ; Year: 2010; Genre: Metal I was in the mood for some different kind of metal today and thought of Savatage/Jon Oliva's Pain; it seemed to fit really well. Anyway, this is one of the harder, less progressive tracks on the album and simply a nice track to be heard. Hear I Fear You on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Soundgarden - Blow Up the Outside World My song pick two years ago today: Genesis - For Absent Friends My song pick three years ago today: Santo & Johnny - Teardrop My song pick four years ago today: Rammstein - Bück Dich My song pick five years ago today: Lulu - To Sir With Love My song pick six years ago today: Primus - Nature Boy My song pick seven years ago today: Deep Purple - Space Truckin'

2660 The Zombies - Care of Cell 44

Image
From: Odessey and Oracle ; Year: 1968; Genre: Pop/Psychedelic Rock For the first time in a while I didn't have a song running through my mind when I was getting ready to pick, so I picked one from a band that I hadn't picked in a long while. In fact I surprisingly haven't picked one from The Zombies in over 2500 picks, but I have picked a few since from band leader Rob Argent's band of his name sake. Anyway, while this one might seem like a piece of high-calorie mainstream pop on the surface, if you listen the music is incredibly done and quite complex. This one was supposed to be the "main hit" from the album, but for one reason of another it was eclipsed by the legendary hit " Time of the Season ." Hear Care of Cell 44 on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Band of Horses - The Great Salt Lake My song pick two years ago today: Stahlhammer - Eisenherz My song pick three years ago today: Exist†Trace - RESONANCE My song pick four

2659 Alice in Chains - I Stay Away

Image
From: Jar of Flies ; Year: 1994; Genre: Alternative Metal/Grunge I heard this song the other day and it has been on my mind ever since, so, like I'm always doing; I'm picking it. This is one that was fairly popular back in the 1990s and definitely of their normal sound. Hear I Stay Away on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Jaco Pastorius (featuring Sam & Dave) - Come Over, Come Over My song pick two years ago today: Chet Atkins - Whispering My song pick three years ago today: Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall, Parts 1-3 My song pick four years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - X-Ray Eyes My song pick five years ago today: Alton Ellis - Sunday Coming My song pick six years ago today: Pat Benatar - Treat Me Right My song pick seven years ago today: Ronnie Milsap - Smokey Mountain Rain

2658 Amnesty - Love Fades

Image
From: Free Your Mind ; Year: 1973; Genre: Funk It's my 61st straight Funky Friday today and I got another awesome one for my pick today; you gotta love that rhythm and thumbing bass on this one. McCall - Wolf Creek Pass My song pick seven years ago today: Eddie Rabbitt - I'm Driving My Life Away

2657 Meat Loaf - I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)

Image
From: Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell ; Year: 1993; Genre: Hard Rock/Progressive Rock Last night I heard this song and felt like an excellent song for this blasé Thursday. I always found that Jim Steinman is one of the few writers, especially when he has Meat Loaf preforming his work, to be able to not only get epic progressive songs in the pop culture, but have them get radio play; this is one of those songs. While the full 12 minute opus hardly ever gets played on the radio, the trimmed 8 minute version often does. Anyway, I've always loved the music and Meat Loaf's powerful vocals throughout this song and of course his duet with "Mrs. Loud." Hear the full 12 minute album version on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: The Beach Boys - I Get Around My song pick two years ago today: Dick Dale - Nitro My song pick three years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Astronomy My song pick four years ago today: Yoshiki Fukuyama - Angel's Voice My son

2656 Ozzy Osbourne - So Tired

Image
From: Bark at the Moon ; Year: 1983; Genre: Hard Rock/Metal I was in the mood for an Ozzy song this morning, so I'm picking one. A few weeks ago I heard this song on the television, and while it's not the normal sound most people think of when they think of Ozzy and his music, it's still a great song and one I like. Hear So Tired on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Mastodon - Iron Tusk My song pick two years ago today: Rammstein - Rammlied My song pick three years ago today: Zombie Nation - Kernkraft 400 My song pick four years ago today: Duke Ellington & His Orchestra - Ko-Ko My song pick five years ago today: Rush - Bastille Day My song pick six years ago today: The Steve Miller Band - Brave New World My song pick seven years ago today: C.W. McCall - Convoy

2655 Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - Another Heart Breaks

Image
From: Time ; Year: 1981; Genre: Progressive Rock/Synth Rock I had another song in mind this morning, but I didn't feel like picking it today. This one has been on and off in my mind for the high side of a month now, so I thought I would choose it today instead since it fit my mood better. This is an excellent instrumental, which closes out the first side of the Time album, which is still my favourite from ELO. I love the overall feeling that permeates this entire track, especially the use of that drum beat and the mixture of major, minor, and diminished chords. Hear Another Heart Breaks on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Jethro Tull - Critique Oblique My song pick two years ago today: Hawkwind - Adjust Me My song pick three years ago today: Frank Zappa - Treacherous Cretins My song pick four years ago today: Charlie Barnet & His Orchestra - Skyliner My song pick five years ago today: Santana - Oye Como Va My song pick six years ago today: Joe Wals

2654 Billy Joel - Worse Comes to Worse

Image
From: Piano Man ; Year: 1973; Genre: Rock I felt like listening to some Billy Joel today and for some reason his Piano Man album seemed to fit my mood the best. This is one of the other hits from the album and has a bit of a funky vibe to it. Hear Worse Comes to Worse on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Marillion - Assassing My song pick two years ago today: Ian Anderson - Kismet in Suburbia My song pick three years ago today: Hawkwind - Fable of a Failed Race My song pick four years ago today: Billy Joel - It's Still Rock and Roll to Me My song pick five years ago today: Daft Punk - One More Time My song pick six years ago today: Al Stewart - Time Passages My song pick seven years ago today: Stealer's Wheel - Star

2653 Jethro Tull - Budapest

Image
From: Crest Of A Knave ; Year: 1987; Genre: Progressive Rock Ever since hearing this one the other day it has been running through my mind and I finally broke down and am picking it on this Sunday. This one is an oddball from not only the album, but also during the period, being that it encompasses so many musical styles and is over 10 minutes in length, which was all but unheard of in the late 1980s even among prog rock groups. This one goes all over the place with their signature but with a tinge of Dire Straits rock, folk, jazz, classical, and everything in between. Also Ric Sanders does a great job adding the violin parts to this great track. Hear Budapest on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Ozark Mountain Daredevils - If You Wanna Get to Heaven My song pick two years ago today: Dream Theater - Lie My song pick three years ago today: Aerosmith - Home Tonight My song pick four years ago today: Jethro Tull - Overseer Overture / Flight from Lucifer My song

2652 Steeleye Span - The Fox

Image
From: Tempted and Tried ; Year: 1989; Genre: Folk Rock First day of November comes... anyway, yesterday while on the road this track came on and I though it would be a great pick for today. This is kind of a unique sounding song from the band for sure that romanticizes a fox and his perils to escape a hunt. Hear The Fox on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Victor Wooten - When I Want to Get Funky My song pick two years ago today: Curved Air - What Happens When You Blow Yourself Up?
