2927 Dazz Band - Swoop "I'm Yours"

Image
From: Joystick ; Year: 1983; Genre: Funk/Electronic Another Funky Friday is upon me and since I've only picked one song from them before and I really like The Dazz Band I thought I would go for another. This song is quite dated with the sound of the era it was recorded in, but for some reason it doesn't detract from it all in my opinion. I love the beat and feel of this one; it's one that makes you wanna get up and move. Hear Swoop "I'm Yours" on YouTube. After that it seemed like an excellent idea to pick one of his track for today. This song, which is very popular amongst those who listen to his music, features the incomparable George Duke lending his talents on the keys. It's a totally brilliant amalgamation of Zappa's signature almost otherworldly musical ideas and cutting-edge jazz fusion at the time. Hear Eat That Question on YouTube. Image
From: Appetite for Destruction ; Year: 1987; Genre: Hard Rock/Metal When looking over the songs by the band that I had already chosen I noticed that this one was not among them, so I will rectify that. Image
From: Queen ; Year: 1973; Genre: Progressive Rock/Hard Rock I was in the mood for something from Queen this morning; this often overlooked but excellent track seemed like a perfect fit for the day. 2918 Alice Mudgarden (Alice in Chains) - Right Turn

Image
From: SAP ; Year: 1992; Genre: Alternative Rock/Grunge Here's an interesting one from Alice in Chains that features the vocals of Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Mark Arm of Mudhoney; members from some of the bigger bands from the Seattle scene at the time getting together for a song. Image
From: A Lonely Man ; Year: 1972; Genre: R&B/Soul I've been meaning to pick this song for quite a few days now; I happened to remember that fact today and made it my pick. I've actually have always loved this song and the band; their flavour of Soul/R&B is just exquisite. The vocals are top-notch and powerful is their delivery of the heart-felt sound and emotion, but the real treat for me personally is the great backing band; I just wish I knew who they were. It's amazing when a group and style of music such as this can take a rather melancholy idea and deliver it in an empowering and positive way. Hear Oh Girl on YouTube. Image
From: Fifth Dimension ; Year: 1966; Genre: Psychedelic Rock/Space Rock This rather cute little ditty about visitors from outer space for some reason felt like a great pick for today; it really fit my mood. Image
From: Face Value ; Year: 1981; Genre: Rock I normally don't have dreams as such, but last night I dreamed that I met Phil Collins and played this song with him for some reason; I thought it would be a good idea to pick it today. 2911 Hawkwind - Be Yourself

Image
From: Hawkwind ; Year: 1970; Genre: Progressive Rock/Psychedelic Rock/Space Rock This song, which is more or less an extended jam/instrumental, was running through my mind this morning and, as usual, I took it as a sign I should make it the subject of today's post. I've actually been failing pretty bad on this theme; thus far I believe I've only made one other. Anyway, I'm adding another one to this theme, and hopefully more. 2907 Jethro Tull - Cup of Wonder

Image
From: Songs From the Wood ; Year: 1977; Genre: Progressive Rock Been having a lot of internet issues today, so I've been having to use my mobile connection to post. Anyway, I was thinking about 'Tull's Songs from the Wood album a bit lately. Image
From: Head Hunters ; Year: 1973; Genre: Funk/Jazz Fusion Even though I had already chosen a song from him, I felt like picking another one of Herbie Hancock's tracks for this Funky Friday ; this one comes from his second backing ensemble: The Head Hunters. This one's got an infectious groove laid down by the bass playing of Paul Jackson and the percussion/drumming of Bill Summers and Harvey Mason. The keyboards and use of the synthesizers in particular along with the horns fill the lead and rhythm perfectly to make it a joy to listen to. Hear Chameleon on YouTube. 2904 Jesus Jones - Right Here, Right Now

Image
From: Doubt ; Year: 1991; Genre: Alternative Rock Last night I'd heard this song for the first time in some years; it was definitely a blast from the past for me so to speak. It was pretty big over 20 years ago, which is strange to believe that it's been that long since it was released. Anyway, thematically this one is kind of a zeitgeist of the '80s and early '90s with making reference to all of the sociopolitical changes going on at the time. Musically it's very much part of the pop/rock at the time; not a bad song at all. Hear Right Here, Right Now on YouTube. Anyway; I wanted to pick something more epic for this pick and looked no further to the complex and thunderous sounds of King Crimson. This is one of their instrumentals that some in progressive circles might've heard or at least a cover or two of it.
