3297. Rush - Prime Mover

Image
From: Hold Your Fire ; Year: 1987; Genre: Hard Rock/Progressive Rock Over the last few days, (or has it been a week now?), I've had Rush's Hold Your Fire album on my mind, and this song in particular. Whilst not even close to their best work, the album and song are not that bad at all; I listen to it a lot while I'm working or playing video games and such. The old Lost Vikings video games come to mind in particular as one I listened to this entire album many times over whilst playing it. Hear Prime Mover on YouTube. 3296. Green Day - Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)

Image
From: nimrod ; Year: 1997; Genre: Alternative Rock Boy, it's been a while since I visited the band Greed Day, and I thought I should pick another one. Whilst I've had somewhat of a fondness for the raw energy of their early albums such as Kerplunk , there's no arguing that their music had matured a lot by the time nimrod came out. This one really shows it in my opinion and has always been one I've liked since I first heard it; there's something about a song with this high level of emotion both lyrically and musically that really can stir the emotions in the listener as well. Hear Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention - Eat That Question My song pick two years ago today: Nocturnal Rites - Ring of Steel My song pick three years ago today: The Moody Blues - The Sunset/Twilight Time My song pick four years ago today: Hawkwind - Damnation Alley My song pick five years

3295. Luther - It's Good for the Soul (Parts I & II)

Image
From: Luther ; Year: 1976; Genre: Funk/Disco/Soul Oi vey, another Funky Friday so it seems... I was going to pick another song until I realized wot day it was; I really need to have some caffeine in my bloodstream before getting on the computer. This is another funky track from the debut album of Luther Vandross' band of his namesake. This totally fun song definitely is one to make you wanna get up and boogie, especially if you have some platform shoes or roller skates around; just need a oldschool light show or lit up dancefloor.... Anyway, it's sad to say that I started getting to this band after watching some old S aturday morning public service shorts that featured the velvety voice of the late-great Luther Vandross; his voice certainly brings back a lot of memories of sitting in front of the television on Saturday mornings watching cartoons... oh the memories. Hear It's Good for the Soul (Parts I & II) on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Gun

3294. Foghat - Slow Ride

Image
From: Fool for the City ; Year: 1975; Genre: Hard Rock For some reason I had this one from Foghat on my mind; kind of surprised it's taken this long to pick their biggest hit. 3293. Psychotic Waltz - Strange

Image
From: A Social Grace ; Year: 1990; Genre: Progressive Metal Still in the mood for some progressive metal today; this is one I like a lot from a band I have yet to pick one from: Psychotic Waltz. This one's from their debut album and is very much one that is perfect for any progressive metal fan or just a metal fan who also is a music aficionado for that matter. Hear Strange on YouTube. 3292. Bob Dylan - Don't Think Twice, It's Alright

Image
From: Freewheelin' Bob Dylan ; Year: 1963; Genre: Folk Last night after hearing this song in a movie I've had this early and rather powerful Bob Dylan track on my mind. There's some excellent minimalist acoustic guitar picking to make the base for some amazing lyrics with so much feeling. Hear Don't Think Twice, It's Alright on YouTube. 3291. Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere But Not Here

Image
From: Deadwing ; Year: 2005; Genre: Progressive Rock/Metal For the last few days I've had Porcupine Tree on my mind off and on; I again decided to go ahead and pick a song. This is the "magnum opus" off of my favourite PT album Deadwing , which comes in at 12 minutes in length of complete musical bliss. Definitely one of the band's best songs if I do say so myself. Hear Arriving Somewhere But Not Here on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: The Who - We're Not Gonna Take It/See Me Feel Me My song pick two years ago today: Chet Atkins - Funky Junk My song pick three years ago today: The Steve Miller Band - Overdrive My song pick four years ago today: The Doors - Light My Fire My song pick five years ago today: Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds My song pick six years ago today: Jethro Tull - Grace My song pick seven years ago today: John Denver - Season Suite: Summer My song pick eight years ago today: The Steve Miller Band - The Win

3290. .38 Special - Caught Up In You

Image
From: Special Forces ; Year: 1982; Genre: Southern Rock After hearing this piece of "southern fried rock" this morning on the radio I thought it would make a great pick for this otherwise average weekend day. It's a pretty good mix of good technical playing with a pop edge; definitely a great one to listen to in most mixed company. Hear Caught Up In You on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Funkadelic - I Bet You My song pick two years ago today: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - ...And the gods Made Love My song pick three years ago today: Boz Scaggs - Can I Make It Last (Or Will It Just Be Over) My song pick four years ago today: Supertramp - It's Raining Again My song pick five years ago today: King Crimson - Sleepless My song pick six years ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 703 - Fughetta: Gottes-Sohn ist Kommen My song pick seven years ago today: What Made Milwaukee Famous - Sultan My song pick eight years ago today: Arlo - R

3289. Carmen - Joy

Image
From: The Gypsies ; Year: 1975; Genre: Progressive Rock/Flamenco Rock On the road a lot yesterday and the flamenco rock stylings of the band Carmen kept coming on my playlist, so I again figured I should pick one of their songs. Whilst lyrically it's not incredible, in my opinion, it makes up for it with the great music throughout, especially the bass towards the end. Hear Joy on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Alice Mudgarden (Alice in Chains) - Right Turn My song pick two years ago today: Midnight Oil - The Dead Heart My song pick three years ago today: Johnny Rodriguez - Ridin' My Thumb to Mexico My song pick four years ago today: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - Op.49 - 1812 Overture My song pick five years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Down, Down My song pick six years ago today: Savatage - The Ocean My song pick seven years ago today: The Steve Miller Band - Serenade My song pick eight years ago today: Ben E. 3288. Quincy Jones - Summer in the City

Image
From: You've Got It Bad Girl ; Year: 1973; Genre: Jazz Fusion/Funk I was thinking about some of Quincy Jones' music this morning and as luck would have it yet again it's a Funky Friday . This cover of the Lovin' Spoonful's hit classic is simply amazing to hear. Everything in this entire piece fits together to make a smooth yet gritty sound; those bass and drums carry the song whilst the keys lay down that amazing melody over the top; just an spectacular take on such an already great song. Hear Summer in the City on YouTube. 3287. Megadeth - Trust

Image
From: Cryptic Writings ; Year: 1997; Genre: Thrash Metal Definitely one of my favourites from Megadeth, (which is saying something because I absolutely adore the band and their music), and one of their most powerful songs in every aspect.   Hear Trust on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: The Chi-Lites - Oh Girl My song pick two years ago today: Guns N' Roses - Knockin' on Heaven's Door My song pick three years ago today: AC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap My song pick four years ago today: Frédéric Chopin - Op.19 - " Bolero " My song pick five years ago today: Missing Link - Filled Up My song pick six years ago today: Hawkwind - The Church My song pick seven years ago today: Quincy Jones - Walking in Space My song pick eight years ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - Dreamer

3286. Billy Joel - Laura

Image
From: The Nylon Curtain ; Year: 1989; Genre: Rock/Pop My mood is in the dumpster today; this cyncial vent that the Pianoman wrote in a Beatlesque style fit my general mood and is speaking volumes to me, so I'm picking it. Hear Laura on YouTube. 3285. John Cougar Mellencamp - Rain on the Scarecrow

Image
From: Scarecrow ; Year: 1985; Genre: Rock Whilst having some on his music on my mind today and noticing I did not pick a song of his yet I thought would. This rather sad and anger filled piece is probably one of my favourites of his; the music melds really well together to tell the story of the plight of the farmer losing his livelihood and land. Hear Rain on the Scarecrow on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight My song pick two years ago today: Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band - Hollywood Nights My song pick three years ago today: Men at Work - Down Under My song pick four years ago today: Pantera - Walk My song pick five years ago today: Hawkwind - Chronoglide Skyway My song pick six years ago today: Yes - Five Per Cent for Nothing My song pick seven years ago today: Megumi Hayashibara - Fly Me to the Moon My song pick eight years ago today: Rahsaan Roland Kirk - Pedal Up

3284. Jethro Tull - The Foot of Our Stairs

Image
From: A Passion Play ; Year; 1973; Genre: Progressive Rock I had this rather pretty and heavy song on my mind this morning, so again I'm making it my pick. Musically this is an incredibly well thought out with mix of folky acoustic and full-on almost hard rock/metal as well. Of course no matter what, the lyrics/subject matter are the heaviest part. I recently found the extended version that's been remastered by Porcupine Tree's own Steve Wilson; I didn't realize this album could get any better, but, wow. Hear The Foot of Our Stairs on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Peter Tosh - Rumors of War My song pick two years ago today: War - Low Rider My song pick three years ago today: Midnight Oil - Truganini My song pick four years ago today: The Nightwatchman - I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night My song pick five years ago today: Van der Graaf Generator - Childlike Faith In Childhood's End My song pick six years ago today: Bill

3283. Rod Stewart - The Motown Song

Image
From: Vagabond Heart ; Year: 1991; Genre: Rock/Pop/Soul/R&B Yesterday this song wouldn't quit playing over and over in my mind; as I usually do I'm taking it as a sign that I need to pick it. The main reason this one sticks in your mind so hard is the "singalong" chorus and the tight harmonies provided by the incomparable Temptations. Hear The Motown Song on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Zapp - I Can Make You Dance My song pick two years ago today: Bachman & Turner - Rock & Roll is the Only Way Out My song pick three years ago today: Mortification - Overseer My song pick four years ago today: Deep Purple - Highway Star My song pick five years ago today: Rush - Not Fade Away My song pick six years ago today: Steeleye Span - Shaking of the Sheets My song pick seven years ago today: Billy Idol - Eyes Without A Face My song pick eight years ago today: Taj Mahal - Fishin' Blues

3282. Ex Deo - Cruor Nostri Abbas

Image
From: Romulus ; Year: 2009; Genre: Power Metal/Death Metal Found out about this band the other day, and I wanted to pick one of their songs. They are basically a death metal band that does songs based on Roman history/subject matter. A bit odd, but thoroughly enjoyable. Hear Cruor Nostri Abbas on YouTube. 3281. Earth, Wind & Fire - Evolution Orange

Image
From: Raise! ; Year: 1981; Genre: Funk/Disco Another Funky Friday upon me and I had Earth, Wind and Fire on my mind as luck would have it. So I decided to pick this rather upbeat and fun song to listen to; it will absolutely help to put you in a good mood. Hear Evolution Orange on YouTube. 3280. Alice in Chains - Check My Brains

Image
From: Black Gives Way to Blue ; Year: 2009; Genre: Alternative Metal Got listening to some newer Alice in Chains the other day; there is something I really like about Black Gives Way to Blue, it hearkens back to the sound of the band in their heyday. This song, like the rest on the album are very based in the raw, early sound of the band. Hear Check My Brain on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Fire of Unknown Origin My song pick two years ago today: Duran Duran - Is There Something I Should Know My song pick three years ago today: Cybotron - Sonic Overdrive My song pick four years ago today: Pearl Jam - Jeremy My song pick five years ago today: Banchee - Iceberg My song pick six years ago today: ZZ Top - Manic Mechanic My song pick seven years ago today: Santo & Johnny - Sleepwalk My song pick eight years ago today: Phil Collins - I Wish It Would Rain Down

3279. Neil Young - Computer Age

Image
From: Trans ; Year: 1982; Genre: Synth Rock/New Wave Off and on lately I've still been listening to a lot Neil Young, and was thinking about this really different and experimental album today. I thought I'd pick one from it; this song seemed to fit my mood quite well. To me, this track in particular, makes me think of more or less what you'd hear from a collaboration between Neil Young and Jeff Lynne; especially from this early 80s era. It's interesting to see how for Neil Young was willing to take his music and push himself and his art; an amazing record in its own right for that reason alone. Hear Computer Age on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Johnny Cash - Thirteen My song pick two years ago today: Jethro Tull - Valley My song pick three years ago today: Ian Anderson - Photo Shop My song pick four years ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - Over the Mountain My song pick five years ago today: Ome Henk - Neem Een Ander In De Maling ( Barbie Girl )

3278. Bachman & Turner - Moonlight Rider

Image
From: Bachman & Turner ; Year: 2010; Genre: Hard Rock Upon hearing this song for the first time if you didn't know any better you'd swear it was written and recorded in the early/mid 1970s. It has all the hallmarks of the classic hard rock sound of that era, but it is from the current decade. All can say is that C.F. Turner's voice hasn't lost any of its soulful punch; neither has the band lost its soul. Hear Moonlight Rider on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Jethro Tull - Cup of Wonder My song pick two years ago today: Desmond Dekker & The Aces - Poor Me Israelites My song pick three years ago today: Sky - Cannonball My song pick four years ago today: Muse - United States of Eurasia (+Collateral Damage) My song pick five years ago today: Alice in Chains - Would? 3276. Bruce Hornsby and the Range - The Valley Road

Image
From: Scenes from the Southside ; Year: 1988; Genre: Rock Was wanting to pick another from Bruce Hornsby today for some reason, so I am. This is an easily digestible song for most casual listeners, but there's also a lot of great and complex music to hear as well, which is nice. My main criticism of this song, which would have, in my opinion, made it much better is that it was mixed thin and flat; especially in the rhythm section. Despite that though it still makes pretty decent track. Hear The Valley Road on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: The Rolling Stones - Get Off of My Cloud My song pick two years ago today: Rick James - She Blew My Mind (69 Times) My song pick three years ago today: Genesis - Squonk My song pick four years ago today: Bob Dylan - Hurricane My song pick five years ago today: Bad Company - Silver, Blue & Gold My song pick six years ago today: Louis Armstrong - We Have All The Time In The World My song pick seven years ago

3275. The Steve Miller Band - Mercury Blues

Image
From: Fly Like an Eagle ; Year: 1976; Genre: Blues Rock For some reason, ever since last night, I had this rather nice cover of a blues by K.C. Douglas on my mind. Though it was originally titled Mercury Boogie and was about as straight-up blues you can get, I've always loved how Steve Miller kept the original blues spirit more or less untouched and added his own blues rock signature sound to it. Hear Mercury Blues on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Head Hunters - Chameleon My song pick two years ago today: Yes - Siberian Khatru My song pick three years ago today: Maddy Prior - Mother and Child My song pick four years ago today: Ludwig Van Beethoven - Op.13 - Piano Sonata No.8 " Pathétique " My song pick five years ago today: Chet Atkins - Tears My song pick six years ago today: Fleetwood Mac - Tusk My song pick seven years ago today: Fairport Convention - Tam Lin My song pick eight years ago today: Cream - Tales of Brave Ulysses

3274. Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Powderfinger

Image
From: Rust Never Sleeps ; Year: 1979; Genre: Rock Last night I was playing a heavily distorted guitar along with some of the songs on this this album; it was incredible fun. I've been bingeing on this album and really enjoying it ever since. This is one of the heaviest songs on the record all around, telling a tragic tail like you'd hear from old poems and folk songs; It brings a chill down your spine, this one. Hear Powderfinger on YouTube. 3273. Béla Fleck & The Flecktones - Flight of the Cosmic Hippo

Image
From: Flight of the Cosmic Hippo ; Year: 1991; Genre: Jazz Fusion/Funk/Post-Bop In the mood for some Béla Fleck and the Flecktones on this Funky Friday. 3272. The Stylistics - I'm Stoned In Love With You

Image
From: Round 2 ; Year: 1972; Genre: R&B/Soul So far today I've had this song running through my mind incessantly; it's one I like quite a bit, so I'm picking it. If you've listened to soul at all you've had to have heard this great, smooth track. Hear I'm Stoned In Love With You on YouTube. 3271. Fates Warning - Stranger (With a Familiar Face)

Image
From: FWX ; Year: 2004; Genre: Progressive Metal Picking one from the old queue this morning; this is kind of a more straight-up rocker from the band, but is filled with all the technical goodness you'd expect from the band. Hear Stranger (With a Familiar Face) on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Herbie Hancock - Oh! Oh! Here He Comes My song pick two years ago today: Lobo - Don't Expect Me To Be Your Friend My song pick three years ago today: Rush - Different Strings My song pick four years ago today: Led Zeppelin - The Rain Song My song pick five years ago today: Béla Fleck & The Flecktones - Big Country My song pick six years ago today: ABBA - When All is Said and Done My song pick seven years ago today: Hawkwind - Motorhead My song pick eight years ago today: Savatage - Can You Hear Me Now

3270. Blue Cheer - Second Time Around

Image
From: Vincebus Eruptum ; Year: 1968; Genre: Hard Rock/Metal This is an interesting piece of hard rock/proto metal from a band that hardly ever gets noticed or given credit; outside of musicians at least it seems. Second Time Around is one that contains mostly big, bombastic instrumentals; my kind of music in other words. Hear Second Time Around on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part 2 My song pick two years ago today: The Cars - You Might Think My song pick three years ago today: Falco - Rock Me Amadeus My song pick four years ago today: Stratovarius - Elysium My song pick five years ago today: Johnny Rivers - Muddy River My song pick six years ago today: Steeleye Span - Padstow My song pick seven years ago today: Rush - Lakeside Park My song pick eight years ago today: Bon Jovi - Every Day

3269. Jane's Addiction - Three Days

Image
From: Ritual de lo Habitual ; Year: 1990; Genre: Alternative Rock/Progressive Rock I felt like picking another one from the early 1990s that I like. On this song and others on this album the band kind of explored some more interesting concepts musically, especially in the 10+ minute piece of music that is basically three songs in one; a mini concept if you will. Hear Three Days on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Grand Funk Railroad - Some Kind of Wonderful My song pick two years ago today: The Isley Brothers - The Pride (Parts 1&2) My song pick three years ago today: Queensrÿche - Spreading the Disease My song pick four years ago today: Fates Warning - Monument My song pick five years ago today: Rush - Alien Shore My song pick six years ago today: Thin Lizzy - The Boys Are Back In Town My song pick seven years ago today: Bon Jovi - My Guitar Lies Bleeding In My Arms My song pick eight years ago today: Three Dog Night - An Old Fashioned Love Son

Image
From: New Miserable Experience ; Year: 1992; Genre: Alternative Rock Off and on for the last couple of days I had this one running through my mind as well; thought I'd pick it too. Interesting, but I thought I'd already picked one from the Gin Blossoms; I guess I was in error. Anyway, this is another one that brings back memories from my preteen/teen years; ah yes, the early 1990s... doesn't seem all that long ago, but it's been over 20 years now.
